Emerging Artist

I am a profoundly deaf artist from a rural area in Co. Wexford, Ireland; driven by a deep connection to nature and a desire to bring awareness to the beauty and fragility of our environment.

Within my creative practice, I am actively engaged in a community project called the Tomhaggard Clean Coasts Group. This initiative has allowed me to actively contribute to environmental care and conservation efforts. Through this involvement, I have witnessed the transformative power of collective action and the importance of fostering a sense of community and responsibility towards our natural surroundings.

In my artistic exploration, I am particularly drawn to the theme of flight and its significance in our relationship with nature. I create functional sculptures, such as homemade kites, which symbolize both the freedom and the control we seek over our environment. These sculptures embody our aspirations to harness energy, such as the power of the wind;  while also acknowledging the uncertainties and forces beyond our control.

The realms of ornithology, conservation, time, wildlife, and habitat provide a rich source of inspiration for my multidisciplinary approach.  Photography, film, sound, functional sculpture, painting, creative writing, and digital image making, are the mediums I choose to work with.

I have had the privilege of participating and curating group exhibitions, including collaborations with the )4343 group, comprised of alumni from IT Carlow. These experiences have allowed me to engage in meaningful dialogues surrounding environmental stewardship and the intersection of art and activism. It is through these collaborations that I continue to explore the complexities of our relationship with the environment and the power of art to inspire change.
